Every year, for 40 years, the Ann Arbor Home Building Program has produced a quality new home. The Sumerset Neighborhood was designed for the Program to build a home every year. This is the 31 st quality home built by the students of the Ann Arbor Student Building Industry Program, Inc. It is a traditional style, located on a beautiful landscaped lot, in the Foxfire Subdivision. It is a spacious 2500 plus sq. ft., two-story home with a brick and vinyl siding exterior. It features Pella windows and doors with a large 14' x 19' wood deck.
There are four bedrooms on the second floor, including a large master bedroom with walk-in closet and master bathroom. The master bath has a jacuzzi, shower, double bowl sinks and vanities. It also features large mirrors, excellent lighting and ceramic tile floors. The main bath has a fiberglass tub/shower combination, double bowl sinks, vanities, and a ceramic tile floor. The second floor landing is accented by a beautiful stained oak balcony railing with painted spindles. The first floor features a family room with a natural gas fireplace, living room, formal dining area, laundry room with several wall and base cabinets and a half bath. The front entrance features an open two-story foyer with ceramic tile floor, stained oak banister and handrails. The kitchen includes solid maple cabinets, generous counter space, two pantry cabinets, recessed lighting and a breakfast area with a sliding door, which opens onto a spacious deck. There are four bedrooms with ample closets, including a master bedroom with a large walk-in closet a whirlpool bath and lots of natural light. The first floor den and the great room share a fireplace. The large kitchen features appliances and a dining area, and opens to a large wood deck. There are two full baths, one half bath and a first floor laundry room with storage. This year’s home was designed by several Huron students working with instructor, Ray Zawacki and local architect, David Peters. The house sold for $ 245,000.

Other features include an energy efficient furnace/air conditioning system, cable TV, and phone outlets in all rooms, super insulation and many special storage areas. Jason Wright was the student designer with interior decoration designed with the assistance of Richard Adams Russell, Inc.
The instructors were Lloyd Cochran and Assistant Robert Mullins and Dick Russell was President and Builder of Record. The home sold for $ 245,000.

Other features include an energy efficient furnace/air conditioning system, cable T.V. and phone outlets in all rooms, and super insulation and special storage areas.
The design of this year’s home was chosen from several which were drawn in the Huron and Pioneer Architectural drafting classes. The student designer was Jim Wise. Former assistant Lloyd Cochran became the Instructor with Assistance from Robert Mullins. Dick Russell was Builder of Record and President of the Board. The home sold for $ 262,000.

The 21st quality home was built by fifteen students. It is a traditional style, located on a large landscaped lot, featuring a cedar and brick exterior, large casement windows, and interior oak stairs and railings. There are three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with two walk-in closets, whirlpool bath and lots of natural light; a first floor den-guest room, a great room with fireplace, a large kitchen featuring oak cabinets, fine appliances and a breakfast area. The great room opens onto a large wood deck.
There are three full baths, one half bath, and a first floor laundry room with lots of storage plus energy saving features, cable, T.V. and phone outlets in all the rooms, super insulation and many special storage areas. A large basement is finished off with a fireplace, large windows and a sliding door leading out to a running brook.
Former Assistant Lloyd Cochran became the new Instructor with Robert Mullins becoming the Assistant. Student designer Eric Wayne’s design was chosen from several which were drawn in the Huron and Pioneer Architectural drafting classes. The interior decoration was designed with the assistance of the Anderson Paint Company. William Kinley, The Phoenix Company, continued as President of the Board and Builder of Record. The home sold for $289,900.

The traditional style house is located on a large landscaped corner lot and features a vinyl and brick exterior. There are three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a cathedral ceiling, one walk-in closet, a whirlpool bath and lots of natural light. The first floor den-guest room with a cathedral ceiling and a sunken great room are special features of this house.
Large energy efficient windows, interior oak stairs and railings, a large kitchen featuring oak cabinets and Corian counter tops, special appliances and a breakfast area compliment this home. The kitchen and dining room open onto a large wood deck. Other features include three full baths, one half bath, a first floor laundry room, energy efficient furnace/air conditioning system, cable T.V. and phone outlets, super insulation and many special storage features. Andrew Lang was the student designer of this house and the interior decoration was done with the assistance of the Anderson Paint Company. William Kinley, The Phoenix Company was President of the Board of Directors and Builder of Record . Tom Lancaster and his assistant Lloyd Cochran were the instructors. The home sold for $ 230,000.

His design was chosen from several which were drawn in the Huron and Pioneer Architectural drafting classes. The interior decoration was designed with the assistance of the Anderson Paint Company and Vera’s Design Studio. Bob Guenther was Builder of Record and President of the Board. The home sold for $250,000.

The 1988 house was built by 20 students in the program. There are three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with two closets, a cathedral ceiling and lots of natural light; a first floor den-guest room, a great room with cathedral ceiling and energy efficient fireplace; a large kitchen with built-in pantry, appliances and a breakfast area which opens onto a large wood deck; three and one-half baths, a first floor laundry room with lots of storage.
Other features of the 18th home include an energy efficient furnace/air system, a built-in alarm system, cable T.V. and phone outlets, super insulation and many special storage features. Robert Guenther continued as Builder of Record and President of the Board with Tom Lancaster as the Instructor and Lloyd Cochran, Assistant Instructor. The house sold for $ 255,000.

The seventeenth home was designed as a contemporary style house and featured a brick and aluminum siding exterior, an open plan with several skylights and oak stair railings. It has three bedrooms-one a master bedroom with two large walk-in closets, a whirlpool bath and separate walk-in shower - a den-guest room, a great room with energy efficient fireplace and two story cathedral ceiling, a large kitchen with appliances and breakfast room which open to a large dining room, three full baths, one half bath and a two-car garage with operators. The house is very energy efficient and has a free-flowing outside deck overlooking a golf course.
Twenty six students were involved in the building of the house and Tom Lancaster and his assistant Kit Johnson were the instructors. The Builder of Record and President of the Home Building Program was Robert Guenther, Guenther Building, Inc..The house sold for $ 181,050.

Twenty students constructed this Williamsburg Colonial home which featured a restoration style vinyl siding exterior, colonial stair railings, three bedrooms, a den-guest room, a great room with energy efficient fireplace and cathedral ceiling, a formal dining room, a dinette, two full baths, two half baths a large kitchen with daylight ceilings and a two car garage. The one-half inch insulated windows, steel insulated doors, R-38 insulated ceiling and an energy efficient furnace helped to make this house very energy efficient. A free-flowing outside deck which overlooked a golf course was an added feature of the 16th home.
The design of this year’s home was chosen from several which were drawn in the Huron and Pioneer architectural drafting classes. Tom Lancaster was the instructor and Kit Johnson was his assistant. Richard Russell was President and Builder of Record. The home sold for $ 136,900.

Richard Russell of Richard Adams Russell, Inc. served as Builder of Record as well as President of the Board. In addition to having very energy efficient windows, doors and walls, the 95% energy efficient furnace helped to make this house very warm and energy efficient. The house sold for $123,500.

Suzanne Dunn of Huron High School designed the 13th house of the Student Home Building Program. Suzanne’s design provided the 25 high school students in the program with many opportunities for their quality built home. The home featured three bedrooms, a den, a great room, a formal dining room, a dinette, two full baths, two half baths, a large kitchen with appliances and a two car garage. The windows, exterior doors, ceilings and walls were built with high energy efficient products. The design of this year’s home was chosen from several which were drawn in the Huron and Pioneer High drafting classes and the interior decoration was designed by students in the Huron home decoration class, Instructor Joyce Prochnow. The instructor, Thomas Lancaster was assisted by Gary Neff. Dave Peters of David O. Peters Associates, Architects and Planners was the Builder of Record as well as President of the Board of Directors. The house was sold for $123,500.

The 12th home was built under the direction of Dave Peters of Fry-Peters Associates, Architects and Planners . Dave also served as President of the Board of Directors for the Student Home Building Industry Program. Thirty high school students constructed the home. The Instructor was Thomas Lancaster and he was assisted by Geoff Brown.
Huron High School Student, Christopher Heaton, designed the 1982 home. Christopher’s winning design was chosen from participants of the Huron Drafting Class taught by Ray Zawacki and Pioneer’s drafting class with instructor, Joe Dell’Anno. The home featured three bedrooms, a den-guest room, a great room with a heatilator fireplace, a formal dining room, a dinette, two full baths, two half baths, a large kitchen with convection range and a two car garage. A unique feature of this house was the passive solar sun room which was designed to capture and release heat from the sun’s rays. The windows, steel insulated exterior doors, ceilings and walls, with high insulation rating and insulated foundation walls helped to make this house very energy efficient. Interior decorations were suggested by students in the Huron and Pioneer home decoration class of Ms. Sandra Bailey and Ms. Joyce Prochnow. The selling price of the home was $ 145,000.

Larry Frank of Pioneer High School designed the home. His winning design was chosen from the Pioneer High Drafting Class of Instructor, Joe Dell-Anno.
The home featured four bedrooms, a sunken family room with stone fireplace, two full baths, two half baths (one in the basement), a full basement, a large kitchen with a convection range, and a two-car garage. The fireplace has an outside combustion air supply and the house has an energy-saving auto vent damper on the furnace and hot water heater along with numerous enegy saving devices. The Interior decoration was assisted by students from the classes of Marjorie Johnson and Joyce Prochnow. The home sold for $ 100,000.

The 10th home saw a new President elected to the Board of Directors, John Wacker of Wacker and Tuthill Company who also served as Builder of Record for the project. Thirty students participated on the project under the direct supervision of Instructor Tom Lancaster and his Assistant Ron Adams. Kevin Peters from Pioneer High School designed the home. Both drafting classes, Huron High School with Instructor Ray Zawacki and Joe Dell’Anno with Pioneer High participated.
Nineteen students from Vivian Bort’s Interior Design class participated in decorating the four bedroom home. It had a sunken family room with stone fireplace, two full baths, two half baths (one in the basement), a full basement and a large two-car garage. The fireplace had an outside combustion air supply. This home featured an energy-saving auto vent damper on the furnace and hot water heater as well as a fuel saver clock thermostat and spark ignition on the furnace. The windows and sliding glass doors, steel insulated exterior doors, ceilings and walls, which carry a high insulation rating helped make this house tremendously energy efficient. The home sold for $ 115,000.

With the new theme, “Building A Future For Students,” the home began under the continued direction of Board President and Building Contractor Thomas McMullen. Direction of the twenty-nine students was the duty of a new Instructor, Thomas B. Lancaster, and his Assistant Ron Adams. Jim Sullivan from Huron High School designed the house.
The 9th house featured four bedrooms, a family room with stone and hand-hewn beam fireplace, two full baths, two half baths (one in the basement), a full basement and a large two-car garage. Vivian Bort, and Karen White, Instructors for the Interior Design Class and their 31 students assisted with the interior decorating. The home sold for $125,000.

Tom McMullen of Thomas B. McMullen Company, Inc. was elected the new President of the Board of Directors and became the Builder of Record for the eighth student home. Student Builders for the project numbered 27 from both High Schools and were under the direct supervision of Instructor Richard Russell and Education Assistant, Stephen Rausch.
The home was designed by Dion McCarthy from the Huron High School Drafting Class instructed by Ray Zawacki. Pioneer High Drafting Instructor Joe Dell’Anno and his class also submitted designs to be considered. Nineteen interior design students under the instruction of Deborah Zornes, worked on the interior decoration with Bob Anderson. This 8th quality home featured four bedrooms, a family room with stone and hand-hewn beam fireplace, two full baths, two half-baths (one in the basement), a full basement and a large two car garage. The home sold for $ 97,000.

The house was designed by Kevin Pratt. His winning design was chosen from the Huron High drafting class of Instructor Ray Zawacki. Twenty seven students, under the direction of Instructor Deborah Zornes, supplied the interior design work for the house. The home, a four bedroom home with a familyroom, brick and hand-hewn beam fireplace, two full baths, two half-baths (one in the basement), a full basement and a large two-car garage, sold for $77,900.

The 6th home built, by the 30 students in the Ann Arbor Student Homebuilding Program had another new feature. A contest had been held with the drafting classes of both schools for a student designed project. The 1976 homes was designed by Basil “Bill” Pappademetriou from Pioneer High School. Robert Guenther, Guenther Building, Inc. became President of the Board of Directors and the Builder of Record for the project. Ann Arbor Federal Savings and Loan continued, as it had since the program’s inception, to provide non-interest financial backing.
This home featured four bedrooms, a family room with stone fireplace, a study, two full baths, two half baths (one in the basement), a full basement, and a large two-car garage. The project was completed under the watchful eye of Instructor Richard Russell and helped by Educational Assistant Jon Gabrielsen. The interior decoration was designed by students in the Pioneer home decorating class of Deborah Zornes. The home sold for $72,900.

The fifth house of the program saw 29 students coming together from the Huron and Pioneer High Schools. An Assistant Instructor was added to the program - Narvelus Pearson to assist Instructor Richard Russell. Mark Solent continued as President of the Board and the Builder of Record on the project.

The interior decoration was designed by 63 students in the Huron and Pioneer Home Decoration classes taught by Diane Sotomayor and Deborah Zornes. The home sold for $69,000.

The fourth house saw a change in the program. More than double the number of students enrolled and worked under the direction of Instructor Richard Russell. Mark Solent of Mark J. Solent, Inc. became President of the Board and was the Builder of Record on the Project.

The doors to the future were opened wide for 26 high school students from Pioneer and Huron High Schools who were building the 3rd Student Home Building project. The 1972-73 school year brought a change of instructors as Richard Russell began his tenure of instructing the students. Henry Landau continued as Board President & Builder of Record.
The program now had a total of six labor unions to supply the project with experienced workers to advise and guide the students through the different steps of construction. This home featured four bedrooms, a family room with a fireplace, two full baths, two half baths (one in the basement), a full basement, and a large two-car garage. The home sold for $ 49,000.

The 1970-71 School year saw the beginning of the first home. Henry Landau, H. S. Landau, Inc. was Board President and Builder of Record. Twenty six students from Huron and Pioneer High Schools were enrolled in the program and saw the project through to completion. With assistance from local journeymen, craftsmen and the supervision of the program’s first instructor, Robert Haddick, they participated in every phase of the construction.
The first house had 2,200 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 2 half-baths, dining room, kitchen with nook, utility room, family room with fireplace, 2 1/2 car garage, full basement with fireplace on a lovely wooded lot. The house sold for $47,500 and with the profit from the first sale, the next project began.

Under the continued watchful eye of the Board President and Builder of Record, Henry Landau, the direction of Instructor Haddick, and Vocational Education Director Earl Shaffer the second home began to take shape for the program. Nineteen students from Huron and Pioneer High Schools participated in the construction. The 1971-72 school year brought an important first to the program as two girls were admitted to the previously all-male program.
Technical advice and assistance were given by journeymen, craftsmen, building contractors and others related to the building industry during each phase of construction. Hundreds of man hours and thousands of dollars worth of materials and services continued to be donated by local business, associations and industry. A new facet to this year’s program was having the interior decoration of the house designed and coordinated by the Huron and Pioneer High School Home Decoration classes. Sixty eight students from the two schools were involved. The house consisted of 1,900 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 2 half-baths, dining area, family room with fireplace, 2 car garage, full basement with fireplace. The home sold for $43,900.
